Limit Divergence Consequences

Procedures should include the consequences of divergence from defined process parameter limits alongside the limits themselves (Cruz-Guerra & Cruz-Gomez, 2002). For panel operators, these are typically located in the master alarm database.

With this information, operators are (Laughery & Wogalter, 2006):

  • More likely to take the appropriate measures to avoid divergence from the limits (Laughery & Wogalter, 2006)
  • Able to identify the cause of the hazard if they experience the consequences

Without this information, operators are (Laughery & Wogalter, 2006):

  • More likely to assume that the consequences of divergence are minor and acceptable
  • More likely to neglect precautionary steps presented in the procedure
Guideline: Divergence Consequences
Consequences of divergence from limits should be included in the procedure with the limits themselves.

Support
The consequences associated with deviating from the acceptable operating limits should be clearly defined (Cruz-Guerra & Cruz-Gomez, 2002).
