Divergence Prevention/Correction

Procedures should include the preventative and corrective actions that address the consequences of divergence from defined process parameter limits alongside the limits themselves (Cruz-Guerra & Cruz-Gomez, 2002).

Actions to be taken in response to divergence that is higher than the upper limit must be distinguished from those to be taken when the divergence is lower than the lower limit (Cruz-Guerra & Cruz-Gomez, 2002).

With this information, operators are more likely to (Laughery & Wogalter, 2006):

  • Correctly perform the procedure such that divergences do not occur
  • Correct divergences if they occur

Without this information, operators are less likely to (Laughery & Wogalter, 2006):

  • Properly respond when a process diverges from the defined limits
  • Carry out corrective actions as quickly due to the need to reference other documents/personnel
Guideline: Divergence Prevention/Correction
Preventative and corrective actions to be taken in response to limit divergence should be included in the procedure with the limits themselves.

Support
The steps required to correct or avoid deviations should accompany the operating limits (Cruz-Guerra & Cruz-Gomez, 2002).
