Safety System Knowledge
Workers must be informed and knowledgeable about the safety systems (e.g., emergency stops, fire alarms, fire suppression) to which they have access. This includes information regarding when the systems should or must be used, and how to use the systems (API RP, 2004; EPA, 1999; OSHA, 1970).
With this information, workers are:
- Aware of the safety systems available to them
- Aware of when the safety systems should be used
- Knowledgeable of how to properly use the safety systems when needed
Without this information, workers are:
- Unable to quickly respond to a situation in which a safety system should be used
- Likely to incorrectly use a safety system, making it ineffective or hazardous
- Likely to not use the safety systems, even when it is necessary (Ockerman, 2007)
